Remove location from photos: questions

What is EXIF data?

EXIF is information a camera or phone stores inside a photo: the date and time, camera model and settings, and often the exact GPS location where the photo was taken. Anyone who gets the original file can read it.

How do I remove the location from a photo?

Remove the EXIF block that holds the GPS coordinates without re-saving the picture. On tuul.io/exif-remover/ you add the photo, the tool lists what it contains, and you download the clean copy; nothing else in the picture changes, and the photo never leaves your device.

Does removing EXIF reduce photo quality?

Not here. Most tools re-save the picture, which compresses it again. This one only cuts out the metadata blocks and copies the image data as it is, so the picture is byte-for-byte the same.

Will my photos turn sideways?

No. Phones often store a photo sideways and use EXIF to say which way is up. This tool keeps that single orientation setting so your photos stay upright, and removes everything else.

What about motion photos and HDR photos?

Phones can store more inside one JPG: a second image (an HDR gain map or a depth map) or a short video. Those carry their own metadata, often with your location. This tool cleans the extra images too and removes the video part, so the still photo is what's left. The row says when that happened.

Are my photos uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser. That matters here: uploading a photo to remove its location would give its location to whoever runs the server.

Do social networks remove EXIF data?

Most large networks strip it from public images, but email, messaging apps sending files as documents, cloud links, forums and marketplaces often keep it. Removing it yourself is the only way to be sure.
