Compress images to a smaller file size

Make photos and images smaller in KB or MB, many at once: keep a quality that looks the same, or pick a size such as under 100 KB for a form, an email or a chat. Everything happens in your browser, so your images are never uploaded and there's no limit.

They get smaller right on your device: JPG, PNG, WebP or iPhone HEIC.

Your files stay on this device. Nothing is uploaded.

How to compress images to a smaller file size

  1. Add your images

Add JPG, PNG, WebP or HEIC images on this page, or choose them from your device. You can add a whole folder's worth at once.

  2. Pick a quality or a size

Quality 75% keeps photos looking the same and usually makes them several times smaller. For a form or upload with a limit, choose Target file size and a size such as 100 KB: each image gets the best quality that fits.

  3. Download them

Each row shows the size before and after. Download the images one by one or all together as a ZIP file.

Compress images: details

Input
JPG, PNG, WebP, HEIC (iPhone photos), AVIF, GIF and BMP, in every current browser
Output
The same format by default (HEIC becomes JPG), or JPG or WebP
Ways to compress
Quality from 10 to 95%, or a target size: 50 KB to 2 MB, or any size you type
Target size
Each image gets the highest quality that fits, found in a few tries. If even 40% quality is too big, the picture is also made smaller in pixels, and its row says so
KB
Counted as 1000 bytes, so a file under 100 KB also passes forms that count 1024
PNG
Fewer colours (up to 256, like TinyPNG), or lossless optimisation with Oxipng, which keeps every pixel
Already small images
If saving again can't make a file smaller, the original is kept, with only its metadata removed
Metadata
Removed, including GPS location and camera details
Number of images
No limit; hundreds at once is fine on a computer
Upload
None; images are compressed in your browser
Price
Free, no watermark, no sign-up

Compress images: questions

How do I compress an image without losing quality?

Save it again at about 75% quality: photos look the same on screen and usually get several times smaller. On tuul.io/image-compressor/ you add the images, keep Quality at 75% and download them; nothing is uploaded. For screenshots and graphics, PNG with lossless optimisation keeps every pixel.

How do I compress an image to 100 KB?

On tuul.io/image-compressor/ choose Target file size and Under 100 KB, then add the images. Each one gets the highest quality that fits under 100 KB; a photo that's too big even at low quality is also made smaller in pixels, and its row says so.

How do I make a photo small enough to email?

Most email services take about 25 MB per message in total. On tuul.io/image-compressor/ keep Quality at 75%, or choose Largest side: 1920 px for a batch of phone photos: each photo usually drops to a few hundred KB, and the summary shows the total before and after.

Are my images uploaded?

No. The compressor runs in your browser, so your photos are read and saved on your own device and never sent to a server.

What's the difference between compressing and resizing an image?

Compressing makes the file smaller in KB or MB and keeps the picture's size in pixels. Resizing changes the pixels, for example to 1080 × 1080, which also makes the file smaller. Use the image compressor for a size limit, and Resize photos on tuul.io/bulk-image-resizer/ for exact dimensions.

Why did a PNG hardly get smaller?

PNG is lossless, so with Lossless chosen it can only be packed more tightly. Choose Fewer colours to reduce it to 256 colours, as TinyPNG does, which usually makes it two to four times smaller. Photos are much smaller saved as JPG or WebP.

Can I compress iPhone HEIC photos?

Yes, in any current browser. They're saved as JPG, because browsers can't save HEIC. HEIC already packs photos tightly, so at the same quality the JPG can be bigger; choose a target size to keep it small.

Is there a limit on how many images I can compress?

No. Everything runs on your device, so the only limit is your device's memory. Hundreds of images at once is fine on a computer.

Next steps

  • Resize photosChange the size in pixels, many at once: exactly 1080 × 1080, half the size, or the longest side.
  • Images to PDFPut photos and scans into one PDF, in the order you choose.
  • Crop imageCut a photo to the part you want: drag a box, pick 1:1, 4:5 or 16:9, or type exact pixels.
